Speightstown’s undefeated colt Prince of Monaco kept his perfect record unblemished in three starts
with a victory in the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity (G1) on Sunday, Sept. 10. It was the second straight
graded stakes win for Prince of Monaco, who captured the Best Pal S. (G3) by 4 ¾ lengths in his previous
start.
Prince of Monaco looked like a winner throughout in the Del Mar Futurity, the seven-furlong headliner
on Del Mar’s closing day. Under jockey Flavien Prat, Prince of Monaco stalked the early pace of
stablemate Mirahmadi from second. He took over approaching the eighth pole and kept on
determinedly to defeat that rival by three-quarters of a length at the wire, stopping the timer in 1:22.65.
The $180,000 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $327,000.
“He broke well, and I thought I was going to go to the lead. But other horses went for it, so we waited,”
said Prat. “On the turn, he made his move, and we made the lead. His teammate was trying hard, but I
think my horse was just waiting for something to come up to him. That didn’t happen.”
Jimmy Barnes, assistant to trainer Bob Baffert, said of the Futurity, “It was the right kind of trip we were
looking for. Prat just got comfortable on the inside and when he needed to get to the outside, he did,
and he accelerated. He’s pretty push button, pretty straight forward.”
A $950,000 graduate of last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, Prince of Monaco is owned by SF Racing,
Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Stonestreet Stables, Dianne Bashor, Robert Masterson, Waves Edge
Capital LLC, Catherine Donovan, and Tom Ryan. The brown colt by Speightstown was bred in Kentucky
by Stonestreet Stables and is produced from the Medaglia d’Oro mare Rainier. Prince of Monaco’s dam
foaled a filly by Constitution this year and was bred back to Speightstown for 2024.
In addition to his impressive wins in the Del Mar Futurity and Best Pal S., Prince of Monaco was an eight-
length winner of his career debut at Los Alamitos in July. Named a TDN Rising Star, Prince of Monaco
headlines the West Coast’s juvenile division and is likely to be among the favorites for this year’s
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) in November.
