Just two days after American Pharoah won the Preakness S. (G1) in a cakewalk, Pioneerof the Nile sired the top two colts at the opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May Sale.
Hip 165 was the top colt, bringing $840,000 from trainer Linda Rice, agent, after working a quarter mile in :21.2 at the May 13th under tack show. The dark bay is out of a young Mineshaft mare, who has already produced two stakes winners, including last year’s Remsen (G2) victor Leave the Light On. Bred in New York by All Gold Racing, the New York-bred was consigned by De Meric Sales, who had purchased him as a yearling for $150,000.
The second high-priced colt was Hip 121, who sold for $500,000 to trainer Mike Maker on behalf of Harvey Diamond. Bred in Kentucky by Robin and Sean Ryan, the bay was consigned by McKathan Brothers, who purchased him for $50,000 at last year’s Keeneland September Sale. This colt worked an eighth in :10.2 on May 13th.
Pioneerof the Nile is on the verge of history, as his second crop son American Pharoah is on target for the first Triple Crown victory in 38 years. Already the sire of six Graded stakes winners and earners of $9-million, he is standing the 2015 season at WinStar for $60,000 Live Foal.
