Lieutenant Colonel battled to a game head victory in his first lifetime start Saturday at Gulfstream Park, making the 3-year-old colt the sixth winner of 2015 for his sire Colonel John.
Colonel John finished ranked fourth on the 2014 Second-crop Sire list, and is right back in a similar spot as his third crop hits the track this year.
Going a mile, Lieutenant Colonel had a two-length lead in midstretch and then held off a late charge by Great Stuff to win by a head in 1:38.31.
Lieutenant Colonel is trained by Chad Brown for Harvey Clarke and Paul Braverman. He was bred in Kentucky and bought by his owners for $180,000 at the 2014 OBS Select 2-year-old sale.
