Speightstown gets 16th SW of 2014

Passion for Action’s authoritative win in Sunday’s $250,000 Cup and Saucer S. made the 2-year-old colt the 16th stakes winner of the year for Speightstown.

Speightstown’s runners have earned more than $7.2 million this year, putting the WinStar stallion once again in the top 10 on the General Sire list.

After being a fairly close sixth through three quarters of a mile in 1:11.27, Passion for Action was swung outside by jockey Luis Contreras, collared the leader inside the eighth pole and drew off for a 3 ¼-length victory in 1:42.66 for the 1 1/16-miles on the turf.

“We saved all the ground,” said Contreras.  “He broke good and I was right behind the speed, waiting for my move.  I had to wait but I wasn’t worried because every time I ask this horse, he gives me everything.   He’s kind of a small horse, but he’s got a big, big heart.”

Winning for the second time in four starts, Passion for Action has bankrolled $191,372 for owner-breeder Ben Hutzel. The Canadian bred filly comes from a family full of black-type winners, including her dam Maritime Passion.
