Speightstown colt chalks up 4th career SW

Weekend Hideaway pulled away late in Friday’s $100,000 John H. Morrisey S. at Saratoga to give the 4-year-old Speightstown colt his fourth lifetime stakes victory.

Weekend Hideaway is Speightstown’s ninth stakes winner this year and pushed his progeny earnings to a nation’s second-best of $5.9 million on the General Sire list. His 40 repeat winners in 2014 tops all North American sires.

Getting into the mix right away, Weekend Hideaway was in a tussle with Moonlight Song for the first half-mile, then began to edge away in the stretch, winning by two lengths in 1:15.83 on a fast track for the 6 1/2-furlongs.

“I let him use his early speed,” said rider Jose Lezcano. “Sometimes in the gate, he misses the break, but today he broke good and settled in front. When I asked, he gave me what I needed to win the race. He’s a very nice colt; I’ve always thought he’s had plenty of talent.”

Red and Black Stable purchased Weekend Hideaway for $40,000 in 2011 as part of the Flying Zee Stable dispersal. The chestnut New York bred has proved to be a great buy, amassing $440,572 in earnings, with a record of 6-3-3 in 16 starts.
