D’ont Lose Cruz was all heart in his maiden special weight win Thursday at the Belmont at the Big A, getting the better of Mariachi by a half-length after a duel that lasted nearly a half-mile of the six-furlong race.
The dark bay 2-year-old is the seventh winner for Always Dreaming, who has also accounted for two-time stakes-placed colt Grand Isle. WinStar recently announced Always Dreaming’s 2023 fee at $10,000 S&N.
D’ont Lose Cruz shot right to the lead from his outside post in the field 10, with Mariachi a half-length back after a quarter-mile in :23.49. The duo was nearly inseparable the rest of the trip, with D’ont Lose Cruz never relinquishing the lead at any point.
The winner was bred by Southern Oak Farm and is owned by a partnership headed by Clear Stars Stable, who purchased him for $100,000 out of the 2022 OBS Spring 2-year-old sale.
