Competitive Edge became Super Saver’s second winner with an overwhelming 10 1/4-length maiden special weight score on Saturday at Saratoga, earning a well-deserved TDN “Rising Star” tag after getting the six furlongs in a rapid 1:09.89 (VIDEO).
With many stellar 2-year-olds yet to race, Super Saver is still a top-5 First Crop sire on the current freshman sire list.
Bred by WinStar Farm, Competitive Edge hammered for $750,000 at this year’s Fasig-Tipton Florida March Sale, the third highest price of the sale. Competitive Edge is out of the stakes-placed mare Magdelena’s Choice and hails from the same family as Awesome Humor, a two-time graded stakes winner at Saratoga.
After dueling through a rapid quarter-mile in :21.87, Competitive Edge began to creep away from King Rontos midway on the turn. With a quick burst at the top of the lane, the margin was suddenly five lengths, and the dark bay continued to pour it on in the final furlong, striding smoothly under the wire with his foes far behind.
“He has never disappointed us in anything that he has done, literally, from the first time we breezed him,” winning trainer Todd Pletcher commented. “He continually showed us he’s a very talented colt, and every time we did something with him it was impressive. So we had high hopes coming into today. You never know when you run one for the first time. We were impressed, but not surprised.”
Pletcher said Competitive Edge’s next target will be the Grade 1 Hopeful S., Sept. 1 at Saratoga.
Owned by Nancy Favreau & Kathy Psoinos, Competitive Edge picked up $49,800 for the victory.
