WinStar Farm freshman sire Super Saver sired his first winner Wednesday, July 2nd when his 2-year-old colt I Spent It, a $600,000 purchase earlier this year, overcame early trouble to impressively capture his debut in a $75,000 Maiden Special Weight dash at Belmont Park (VIDEO).
Well backed at 7-2 odds for his debut, I Spent It broke well and was forwardly placed before being forced to check sharply in the early stages of the five-furlong contest. Despite losing some ground, the bay colt was able to stay in contention on the turn, and loomed up on the outside of the post-time favorite turning for home. I Spent It swapped to his right lead and accelerated past the pacesetter in the stretch, proving best at the wire. The final time was 58.11 seconds over a fast Belmont main track.
Bred in Kentucky by Dixiana Farms, I Spent It hails from the Sky Mesa mare, Rateeba. He earned $45,000 for the win.

Trained by Tony Dutrow, I Spent It was purchased for $600,000 by owners Alex and JoAnn Lieblong at the Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale for 2-year-olds in training back in March. The sale price for a colt from the first crop of Super Saver was only second to a $750,000 colt sold at the same sale. Earlier in March, the Lieblongs purchased a Super Saver filly for $675,000 at OBS March.
Super Saver was a record setter and classic winner on the racetrack. A leading 2-year-old of his crop, he set a new stakes record in the Kentucky Jockey Club S. (G2). Super Saver’s biggest win came the following year at Churchill in the coveted Kentucky Derby (G1). The millionaire retired to WinStar, where he recently completed his fourth season at stud for a fee of $17,500 stands and nurses.
By Maria’s Mon, Super Saver is out of the A.P. Indy mare and top producer, Supercharger. His first 2-year-olds averaged $148,031 from 49 sold at 2014 sales, including the highest colt and filly sold for a freshman sire with the aforementioned $750,000 colt and $675,000 filly.
