Sum of the Parts stellar at Sam Houston

Speightstown’s veteran sprinter Sum of the Parts kicked off his 2014 campaign with a track record performance in Saturday night’s $75,000 Champion Energy Services S. at Sam Houston Race Park (VIDEO).

Five-year-old Sum of the Parts now has six stakes wins to his credit, including back-to-back victories in the Grade 3 Phoenix S. at Keeneland

Owned by Klaravich Stables LLC and William H. Lawrence, Sum of the Parts lowered the track mark in the five-furlong affair after dueling with Bounding Bi before surging ahead in the lane to hit the wire in :56.21 on the firm turf.

“He’s made a living on the front end,” said trainer Tom Amoss on the front-running style of Sum of the Parts. “It’s no secret that we are going to send him and hope he holds on. This was a very good field.”

Sum of the Parts upped his career earnings mark to $806,543 with the $45,000 payday.

Sum of the Parts was one of three stakes horses for Speightstown in the past five days. Also on Saturday evening at Sam Houston, Fredericksburg ran second in the featured $200,000, Grade 3 John B. Connally Turf Cup S. The 4-year-old has bankrolled $170,366 in his 13 starts. On Jan. 20, Coastline, who won the Street Sense S. at Churchill Downs last autumn as a juvenile, was third in the $100,000 Smarty Jones S. at Oaklawn Park.
