Breeders’ Cup Preview: Colonel John

Top-five Freshman sire Colonel John will have two Breeders’ Cup starters from his first crop in this weekend’s year-end championships at Santa Anita Park.

The improving Colonel Joan drew post 3 for the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) on Friday. The bay filly, trained by Eoin Harty for Kathy Harty and Mark DeDomenico, showed a big turn of foot in the Oct. 6 Surfer Girl S. on the Santa Anita lawn. After breaking slow, she made up a ton of ground to be beaten a little more than a length.

Joe Talamo, who rode in the Surfer Girl, will be aboard once again. Post time for the Juvenile Fillies Turf, race 9 on Friday, is 6:50 pm ET.

On Saturday, Concave drew post 6 for the $2 million Juvenile Fillies (G1). The bay filly, owned by Reddam Racing, already has a Grade 2 win to her credit in the Sorrento S. (G2) at Del Mar. Bred to go a route of ground, Concave will be making her first start around two turns.

Concave, bred in Ontario by Windways Farm Ltd., was purchased by trainer Doug O’Neill’s brother Dennis for $160,000 at the OBS March 2-year-old sale.

The Juvenile Fillies is race 4 on Saturday, with a post time of 3:05 pm ET.
