In the latter half of Wednesday’s session of the OBS 2-year-olds in Training sale, a colt by Constitution that sold for $550,000 represented the top price paid for a male juvenile to that point of the two-day sale.
Wavertree Stables, Inc. consigned hip No. 386, which went to Dennis O’Neill.
The colt is out of the Smart Strike mare Screwgie, whose dam Roshani was a three-time graded stakes winner. The family traces back to Grade 1 winners Data Link and Hymn Book.
Constitution, whose first foals are 3-year-olds of 2020, has been one of the hottest young sires in recent years. He led all freshman sires of 2019 by stakes winners with five, four of them graded winners, and was tied for the top spot by winners, with 27. He currently leads the Second-Crop sire list and has two major Triple Crown hopefuls in Independence Hall and Tiz the Law.
